01
What is the State of Origin series?
The State of Origin is an annual best-of-three rugby series played between the New South Wales Blues and the Queensland Maroons. It is considered one of the fiercest rivalries in Australian sport.
The event’s inception came from an idea to trial players representing the state they first played their senior rugby league in – their “state of origin”. After a successful match in 1980, the State of Origin format became the standard from 1982 onwards.
02
What is the current head-to-head record between New South Wales Blues and Queensland Maroons?
As of the end of the 2025 series, Queensland have won 25 State of Origin series titles, compared to New South Wales’ 17. Before the adoption of the best-of-three format, there had been 2 drawn series.
03
Where and when will the 2026 State of Origin Series be played?
- Game I – 27 May 2026 – Accor Stadium, Sydney
- Game II – 17 June 2026 – Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Melbourne
- Game III – 8 July 2026 – Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane
04
What happens if the series is won after two games?
All three State of Origin games go ahead regardless of earlier results. Even if the series is won in the first two matches, Game III remains a major event, often the most exciting with fans travelling to watch either a clean sweep attempt or a fierce fightback.
