What are the courts at the Australian Open?

+

Melbourne Park is a world-class sports and entertainment precinct featuring 3 arenas and over 30 outdoor courts.

Rod Laver Arena

Rod Laver Arena (RLA) is the main show court of the Australian Open and seats approximately 15,000 spectators. This is an exclusively ticketed arena and cannot be accessed with a Ground Pass. It has a retractable roof allowing uninterrupted play in all weather conditions.

Margaret Court Arena

Margaret Court Arena is the other main court of the Australian Open and seats approximately 7,500 spectators offering a more intimate view of the tennis action. This is an exclusively ticketed arena and cannot be accessed with a Ground Pass. It has a retractable roof allowing uninterrupted play in all weather conditions.

John Cain Arena

John Cain Arena, also known as “The Peoples Court” seats approximately 10,300 spectators. Larger than Margaret Court Arena, this arena is accessible by Ground Pass holders, with only a select number of reserved ticketed seats. It has a retractable roof allowing uninterrupted play in all weather conditions.

What time do the sessions start?

+

The Australian Open tournament is split into three ticketed session types for the show courts. A full order of play will be available the night before each day’s play on the official Australian Open app and ausopen.com

Day Session

All Day Session ticketholders can access the grounds from 10am. Play on the outdoor courts begins at 11am, while matches in Rod Laver Arena and Margaret Court Arena commence from 12pm. At the conclusion of the Day Session, ticketholders must vacate these main arenas, although they can continue to enjoy matches on the outdoor courts as well as other on-ground entertainment for the remainder of the day.

Night Session

All Night Session ticketholders can access the grounds from 5pm. Play on the outdoor courts will already be underway from earlier in the day. Matches inside Rod Laver Arena and Margaret Court Arena are scheduled to start at 7pm. However, if Day Session matches extend longer than expected, entry into these arenas will be delayed until the earlier play has concluded.

Twilight Session

There are three Twilight Sessions throughout the tournament.

The first Twilight Session is for the Women’s Semifinal. Ticketholders may enter the grounds from 10am, with outdoor court play beginning at 11am. The Women’s Semifinal match itself does not commence until 7pm.

The second Twilight Session features the Women’s Singles Final followed by the Men’s Doubles Final. Grounds access opens from 11am, though there is limited play on the outdoor courts during the day. Both finals are played consecutively, beginning at 7:30pm.

The final Twilight Session takes place on the last day of the tournament, showcasing the Women’s Doubles Final followed by the Men’s Singles Final. Ticketholders may enter the grounds from 2pm, with the Women’s Doubles Final starting at 3pm, and the Men’s Singles Final scheduled for 7:30pm.

What happens if it rains?

+

The three main show courts – Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena, and John Cain Arena – have been equipped with retractable roofs to ensure uninterrupted play in all weather conditions.

Can I choose which tennis matches or players I see?

+

Keith Prowse Travel offers tickets to a range of sessions across the tournament and, subject to availability, can tailor packages to specific sessions, rounds, and days.

The daily order of play is only released the evening prior however, which means we cannot guarantee which players will appear in a particular session at the time of booking.

What is the best way to travel to Melbourne Park?

+

Walk

Melbourne Park is easily accessible on foot from the CBD. It’s approximately a 20-minute walk from Flinders Street Station, following a scenic route along the Yarra River or through Birrarung Marr parklands. Walking is a great option with no need to navigate traffic or wait times.

Tram

Trams are one of the easiest and most convenient ways to get to Melbourne Park. During major events like the Australian Open, Route 70 and special event trams run frequently from Flinders Street (Stop D6) to Melbourne Park (Stops 7B-7D). These services are free for ticketholders, with trams running every few minutes during peak times. Please note that there will likely be delays during peak periods.

Taxis and rideshare services like Uber and DiDi are convenient ways to get to Melbourne Park with designated drop-off and pickup zones located on Olympic Boulevard near John Cain Arena. Please note that in peak periods there will be delays and price surges.

Water Taxi

For a more premium and scenic experience, you can travel to Melbourne Park via a water taxi down the Yarra River.
