Roland-Garros is the only Grand Slam played on a red clay surface. These courts are built with five layers, totalling about 80cm in depth. At the base lies a foundation of stones, followed by crushed gravel, clinker (coal residue), and crushed white limestone. The final top layer consists of a thin coating of crushed red brick dust, which gives the courts their iconic colour.
